Students Take Up Amey Engineering Challenge!

It was great to be back at Amey Engineering for a full Challenge Day with a group of Year 10 students to mark Women In Engineering Day 2022, organised by Sonia Smith, Project Director at Amey.

This marked a welcome return for the annual event after a pandemic hiatus. The day involved civil engineering challenges based on an existing Amey project-in-progress on The Strand, in Liverpool 1.

Teams had to identify locations on a real civil engineering map, then had to devise a system of improving the flow of traffic while keeping pedestrians safe; giving cyclists a way through the city centre avoiding traffic; enabling access to Liverpool 1 and the Docks and tourist areas while preserving the environment and enhancing the look of the city.

They had to cost any work they proposed with existing engineering guidelines and real figures and finally, present their ideas to a judge who also worked with the teams during the day. This was no small task yet every young person gave it their all, working brilliantly with each other and interacting fantastically with the Amey engineers who spent the day with them.

Lunch was also a highlight of the day with a wonderful VIP lunch the largest tray of chocolate brownies we’ve ever seen which disappeared within minutes! Well done to Lauren, Nissi, Faye, Tamia, Brooke, Alexia, Harveer and Grace whowere fantastic ambassadors for themselves, their families and our school.
