Magnificent Debate Mates

On the evening of Wednesday 13th March, six pupils from Years 8 and 9 (Daisy, Abbieleigh, Juliette, Holly, Alisha and Katie) represented St Julie’s in the Debate Mate League, which was held at the North Liverpool Academy.

Facing off students from around the region, and demonstrating an impressive array of communication skills, which have been shaped by their involvement in the ongoing programme, the girls debated thoughtful political issues, (which would challenge most A Level students) such as the benefits of the ‘First Past The Post’ system, and the ethics behind fast food organisations advertising during sporting events.

Our students made us extremely proud emerging victorious in Round 1 when they tackled students from Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy, Runcorn. Working as a team, they formulated cohesive arguments that were articulated confidently and professionally, and were commended for their preparations.

Unfortunately, the pupils were defeated in Round 2, in what was a fiercely-fought debate. Unwilling to live with this defeat in perpetuity, our girls have demanded a re-match. Thankfully, they will be given this opportunity on the 23rd April when two teams from St Julie’s will be attending the Debate Mate Cup – a whole day event held at Liverpool John Moore’s University.

We are thrilled with the engagement and growth in confidence exhibited by our pupils and foresee much more success in the next meetings. Well done to all involved!
