Year 10 Students Take Robotics Challenge

This week, four Year 10 students took part in a ‘MerseySTEM robotics challenge’ hosted by GETRAG FORD Transmissions GmbH in Speke.

The day began with an introduction to STEM from MerseySTEM  Director Michelle Dow;  what it is and how it can shape the future and promote opportunities for young people in our area.

The ‘Robotics Challenge Day’ involved St Julie’s plus seven other schools from our region. Each four person team was split into two with one pair tasked with constructing the body while the other contracted the robotic arm.

The day enabled students to understand a variety of design, science and engineering principles and also encouraged teamwork, leadership and problem solving skills.  The event aimed to inspire and excite students’ interest in robotics and to demonstrate the practical application of mathematics and engineering.

Having completed their respective tasks, both pairs assembled the robot together.

Following a short lunch break and attending to last minute alterations we were ready to participate in the tennis ball tussle.

The games were fast paced and teams had to control their robot moving it into position and using the claw to capture the tennis ball and drop it into the goal.

Although we didn’t quite make it to the final, we gave an impressive performance, thoroughly enjoyed our day and would like to thank all of the STEM ambassadors and staff at GETRAG FORD.
