Letter to parents of all year groups

Jul 4, 2014

Please see below a letter circulated to all parents regarding industrial action to be carried out on Thursday, 10th July 2014.

4 July 2014

Dear Parents/Carers

Re: Industrial Action – Thursday 10 July 2014

As I am sure you may be aware, members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), UNISON and GMB have recently voted in favour of industrial action and notified the Governing Body and the City Council of this.  This action is in connection with the final pay offer for local government employees of 1% and also forms part of the teacher union ongoing trade dispute over teachers’ pay, pensions and workload. UNITE are expected to announce their decisions on whether to strike soon.

I am writing to advise you therefore that there will be national industrial action on Thursday 10 July 2014.

St Julie’s Catholic High School has 18 teaching staff who are members of the NUT and who have confirmed they will be on strike on this day, in addition to many members of Support staff who are members of UNISON, GMB and UNITE.   As a result of this industrial action the school will be closed to students on the above date.  I have had to assess the possibility of keeping the school open for certain groups.  However, I am constrained by regulations that do not allow me to bring in supply teachers to cover lessons that would have been taught by teachers who are engaged in the industrial action. Also, other teachers in Unions other than NUT are not allowed to cover for teachers on strike.  As a result of this we would not be able to guarantee the health, safety and well-being or educational provision for the students with a significant number of teaching staff and support staff across administration, catering, premises, cleaning and classroom support, taking part in the industrial action.

This is not an issue peculiar to St Julie’s or even to Liverpool. This is a national issue and I am sure you have seen much about it in the news.

Normal education will resume for all students on Friday 11 July 2014 when we will also receive a visit from Mayor, Mr Joe Anderson, who is coming to St Julie’s to talk to the students about his plans for a new school for them. We expect all students to be present for lessons as normal on Friday 11 July 2014 as we carry on our work until the end of term on Friday 18 July 2014.

Kindest regards.

Yours faithfully
Mr T Alderman
