Allerton Oak Poems

We've previously reported that two of our students placed second and third in the Allerton Oak Poetry competition, and now we have the poems published for you to enjoy.

Allerton oak - by Aislinn Rushforth

I was dumped here on that gloomy winter's day,
I hope to never feel the same way,
Spring, summer, autumn, winter,
All day long, I would listen to her song.

(Shush said the trees in the cold winter's breeze)

She would teach me when I would need taught,
She would reach for me when I needed to talk,
She would love me when I needed loved,
She would talk to me when I was lonely.

(Shush said the trees in the cold winter's breeze)

But then the sad winter's day came.
How lonely she must feel,
With her new arms made out of steel.
It was too cold to go out.
With new arms she stood up tall,
This just showed me how I was so small.

(Shush said the trees in the cold winter's breeze)

Every night she would welcome me home,
With her wide spread branches and her waving leaves.
I hope she stays beyond the end of my days,
In her world of trees, rustling through the winter's breeze.

Where is she? by Maisie Harrison

Winter, bare branches frosted leaves,
Numb and cold knocking knees,
One person looking for another,
Where could she be oh my mother,
Let these branches give me hope,
For like the others I cannot cope,

Spring, flowers rise along with the sun,
Without your presence I’ve lost all fun,
So within reach of these branches today,
I stand with the others and pray,
Without you I haven’t spoke,
So come back to me and the Allerton oak,

Summer, beaming sunlight as bright as you,
But today you’re not here, and that’s new,
I need your hug and your love,
Our memories with this tree I hope you have one above,
This tree reminds me of your happy life,
You was filled with passion and strive,

Autumn, as I sit beneath this tree,
Leaves start to fall upon my knee,
Allerton oak oh the happiness you give out,
I and my mother didn’t have a doubt,
Your love spreads throughout all of you,
Now continue to spread happiness as you do.

Winter, bare branches frosted leaves,
Numb and cold knocking knees,
One person looking for another,
Where could she be oh my mother?
