Youth Climate Strike

As you may be aware, there are plans for a 'Youth Climate Strike' to take place in Liverpool City Centre on the morning of Friday 15th March. The stated aim of this protest is for climate change and the dangers it poses to become part of the 'national conversation'.

As a Catholic school, all members of our community - students and staff - fully support the call for serious and immediate action to be taken to address the damage being caused to God's world. Integral to our Mission Statement is a commitment to 'take good care of God's world and all who inhabit it, especially the poor and disadvantaged' and so this always has and always will be central to all that we do. Even our new school building was designed and constructed in a manner that takes account of our responsibility to be good stewards of our environment - whether that be through the preservation of the ancient woodland bordering the school or the installation of solar panels on the roof.

The event in Liverpool city centre is not organised by - and so cannot be risk-assessed by - St Julie's Catholic High School. For that reason, we are not able to grant permission for any students or staff to participate in this protest.

Non-attendance at school in order to attend this event would therefore have to be recorded as unauthorised absence.

Instead, we encourage all students and staff to attend school on Friday 15th March and work with us on planning and delivering a range of activities through which we can show our support for those voices - especially the voices of our young people - calling for a more sustainable and responsible approach to our relationship with our environment.

We hope that the first of these events will take place in school tomorrow - and look forward to working with our students over the coming weeks, months and years to co-ordinate the action that we as a school can take.
