Peace Bell Starts Century Countdown

At 8:20 this morning, the Peace Bell at St. Julie's sounded to start a week long commemoration of the end of the First World War.  The bell, situated in the recently opened Peace Garden, will sound every 20 minutes throughout the school day all the way through to Friday.  Then, at 11:00 a.m., with the entire school community gathered in the Peace Garden, it will peal for the one hundredth time to signal the end of a minute's silence.

Students of all ages pealed the bell and reflected on the sacrifice made by so many over the years.

After a few moments' reflection, the volunteers recited an extract from Robert Laurence Binyon's famous poem - For The Fallen:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

The pealing of the bell sparked many conversations and the sharing of stories of relatives and their role in various conflicts over the years.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
