Gliding Into Science Club

This week the Year 7 Science club had fun looking at some of the different forces at work in flying.  They made Hoop Gliders, constructed from two different sized hoops of cardboard attached to a drinking straw.  When the gliders were thrown like a dart, this forward force, called thrust, allowed air to flow through and around the hoops.  This air flow created lift, which caused the gliders to sail through the air.

The girls experimented with different sized hoops, number of hoops, length of the straw, straw placement and even adding wings and fins.  The different models were then tested in a classroom ‘fly off’.
