Foundation Day: A Day To Remember!

It is always a great privilege for our school community to be visited by the Sisters of Notre Dame, and this year we were doubly honoured as Bishop Tom Williams was able to join us for our annual celebration of Foundation Day.

Mr Anderson led us through the celebration, where students in Year 7 and 8 reflected upon the courage and determination of Saint Julie and Françoise Blin de Bourdon (later Mother St. Joseph) as they risked their lives to pursue their goals of educating the poor.

We shared the history of the Sisters' arrival in Liverpool and how we can draw a direct line between our own school and those first bold steps taken by Julie and Françoise.

The celebration featured several thematic performances from our talent Performing Arts students, combining song and dance in reflection, poignancy and jubilance.

In a moving final address and blessing from Bishop Tom, he spoke of investigations that he had made into his own family history in Liverpool, working through Parish Records and other historical documents, and made the observation that the women in his family prior to the arrival of the Sisters were intelligent, but not literate. This changed after the time of the arrival of the Sisters in Liverpool, when the women in the family were clearly becoming literate and better educated. This was a powerful way to bring sharp focus to our students of the huge impact that the Sisters had in our city and all that we had to be so grateful for.
